Torah Study Leads to an Unexpected Mitzvah

August 8, 2015

She had always thought Torah study was reserved for really pious, really observant Jews. But after hearing from a friend and fellow-congregant that Torah study was her favorite hour of the week, Laura Diamond—a member of Kehillat Israel in Pacific Palisades, CA—decided to give it a try. At first, it was challenging. Then, she divulges, "...the biggest revelation was that ancient people struggled with the same human concerns as I do, and that they had relevant wisdom to share. The big secret about Torah study is this: It is not 'studying.' It is a dynamic conversation about what it means to live with meaning, purpose and compassion."
One lesson she particularly connected with was the notion that we should welcome the stranger. So when Diamond received an email asking if anyone could provide a home for an 18-year-old girl from Guatemala, she jumped at the chance.
